Beckett Could Have Set Back With Thumb

Just one day after finding out that Andrew Bailey is suffering from a thumb injury. We find out Josh Beckett may be as well. Today Beckett is in San Antonio, Texas getting his thumb checked out. The injury could set him back but Bobby Valentine believes he will make his first start in Detroit.

On Sunday Beckett tossed a long bullpen and has had a great spring.

"He threw 100 pitches yesterday and felt great, good location," Bobby V said. "He's had a little situation that he's getting taken care of today just for a peace of mind."

If Beckett is unable to make his first start of the year that will go to the hand of Alfredo Aceves. Aceves who found out yesterday that he may not be apart of the rotation.

"[Valentine} said Josh Beckett has an injury in his thumb. That's waht he said and if he doesn't start the second game, I will start the second game and the first game at home," Aceves said. "And then he said, 'For now your going to be in the bullpen.'"

Aceves seems to be angry over not getting a spot in the rotation and knows that he is deems for the bullpen even if he pitches well in the rotation. Hopefully he can use the anger as motivation to pitch better this season but it seems unlikely. Aceves came in this spring with the goal of pitching in the rotation and that is not possible. Valentine added that Felix Doubront got a spot because he is lefthanded and the higher ups in the Red Sox organization wanted to give Daniel Bard a shot.

"So I got no chance. It don't matter how good you throw, you're still not going to pitch," Aceves said.

We will find out later today if Beckett will make the start on Saturday or if it will be Aceves.
